Pumpkin Spice, Cozy Sweaters &… Home Maintenance?

I know, I know… it’s still August. We’re not quite ready to trade sandals for sweaters or summer evenings for pumpkin-spiced everything. But while fall may still be a few weeks away, now is actually the perfect time to give your home a little attention before the rain, wind and cooler temperatures arrive.

Start at the Top: Gutters & Downspouts

Before those first heavy fall rains arrive, take a good look at your gutters and downspouts. Leaves, pine needles and summer debris can build up surprisingly quickly, and a clogged gutter can turn a simple rainstorm into a much bigger problem.

Clean out the gutters and make sure water can flow freely through the downspouts. Check that the gutters are securely attached and that downspouts are directing water away from your home’s foundation. If you have extensions, make sure they’re still in place and doing their job.

A few minutes of maintenance now can help prevent water from ending up where you definitely don’t want it—around your foundation, siding, landscaping or even inside your home.

Don’t Forget the Roof

While you’re already thinking about everything that’s keeping the rain out, it’s a good time to give your roof some attention, too.

Look for missing, damaged or loose shingles, cracked flashing and any areas that appear worn or compromised. Keep an eye out for moss or debris buildup, especially if your home is surrounded by trees.

And remember, your roof doesn’t have to be actively leaking to have a problem. Catching a small issue before the fall and winter weather arrives can potentially save you from a much larger—and much more expensive—repair later.

If you’re not comfortable getting on the roof yourself, don’t. Many roofing companies offer roof inspections, and having a professional take a look can be money well spent—especially before the wet season arrives.

And if you’re not sure who to call, that’s where we can help. We’re always happy to point you toward trusted local professionals who can take a look and help you keep your home in good shape.

Give Your Furnace a Little Love

Once the outside of your home is ready for the weather, it’s time to turn your attention indoors.

Your furnace has probably spent the summer doing absolutely nothing, and pretty soon you’re going to ask it to work several hours a day. Before that first chilly morning sends everyone scrambling for the thermostat, give it a little attention.

Start with the simple things: replace the furnace filter and make sure your vents aren’t blocked by furniture, rugs or other items. If your heating system hasn’t been checked in a while, fall is also a great time to have it professionally inspected and serviced.

A little attention before you need the heat can help your system run more efficiently and give you a better chance of catching a problem before you’re standing in a cold house wondering why the thermostat says 68° and you can see your breath.

Because there are few things worse than discovering your furnace has a problem on the first really cold night of the season.
